Italian geminates under speech rate and focalization changes: kinematic, acoustic, and perception data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Italian geminate consonants have been studied as for both their phonetic characteristics and their phonological status. As for the phonetic aspects, though, few works focus on kinematic data. This study relates on both acoustic and kinematic material, as well as on perception data, in order to get evidence on the phonological status of geminate consonants. A read speech corpus was collected and analyzed both acoustically and kinematically, after being checked perceptually. The corpus is represented by utterances containing target words with bilabial and labiodental consonants, realized as singleton, geminates and within clusters, and produced at a natural speech rate and under speech rate and focalization changes. Data show that the lower lip opening gesture is similarly characterized in geminates and clusters, offering additional phonetic evidence that geminates may be given an heterosyllabic interpretation. Productions in focused contexts confirm results obtained in relation to the analysis of natural speech rate stimuli, while the increasing in speech rate shows that kinematic correlates of gemination appear to be more stable than acoustic ones, and that geminates still show characteristics similar to heterosyllabic segments, i.e. clusters.

متن کاملGemination at the junction of phonetics and phonology
Tashlhiyt Berber has contrastive singleton and lexical geminate consonants in all positions. In addition, it has two types of phonologically derived geminates: concatenated and assimilated ones. Within CV phonology, geminates, including post-lexical ones, are represented as single melodic units associated to two prosodic positions. This study examines the way these abstract autosegmental repres...

Japanese deploys a singleton-geminate contrast in obstruents and nasals, but not in glides. Even though Japanese allows lexical nasal geminates, patterns of emphatic gemination show that Japanese avoids creating nasal geminates. Japanese therefore disfavors sonorant geminates in general, and glide geminates in particular. These phonological patterns of geminates are actually found in other lang...

PURPOSE In this investigation, the authors determined the strength of association between tongue kinematic and speech acoustics changes in response to speaking rate and loudness manipulations. Performance changes in the kinematic and acoustic domains were measured using two aspects of speech production presumably affecting speech clarity: phonetic specification and variability. METHOD Tongue ...
متن کاملThe prosody of left-dislocated topic constituents in italian read speech
The prosody of the left periphery of the sentence is investigated by means of acoustic analysis of read speech data. In Italian, syntactic constituents can be left dislocated when they represent the topic or focus part in the sentence. In this paper, the characteristics of topic and focus constituents are then compared, in particular when different types of prosodic focalization affect them. Re...
